Team USA, which has the most Fed Cup titles with 17, will go for its first since 2000 against defending champion Italy after winning the best-of-five semifinal, 3-2.

Mattek-Sands first kept the United States' hopes alive with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Ekaterina Makarova on the indoor hardcourt at the Birmingham- Jefferson Convention Complex Arena. Makarova had won the lone previous meeting in 2007 at Los Angeles.

Shortly after, Mattek-Sands and Huber notched a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Elena Dementieva and Alla Kudryavtseva to secure the tie win. Dementieva had put the United States on the brink of elimination earlier in the day with a 7-6 (7-4), 0-6, 6-3 win over Melanie Oudin.

The final against Italy will take place in November after the Italians swept their tie against the Czech Republic. The Italians captured their second Fed Cup crown in four years last fall with a win over the United States.
