Grizzlies pound Suns, gain first win in Phoenix since 2005

Basketball Betting Lines

01/02/2010 - Phoenix, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - O.J. Mayo dropped in 25 points and rookie Sam Young scored 22 off the bench, as the Grizzlies annihilated the Suns by an unlikely 128-103 margin at US Airways Center.

Memphis shot 53.1 percent from the field and 8-of-15 from three-point range to improve to .500 (16-16) on the season following its third straight win and sixth in seven games overall.

Zach Randolph ended with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Marc Gasol chipped in 19 and nine, and Rudy Gay scored 16 points in the wire-to-wire win, the Grizzlies' first in Phoenix since November 16, 2005.

Amare Stoudemire logged 29 points and Steve Nash donated 19 points and 13 assists for Phoenix, which was coming off impressive wins over the Celtics and Lakers.

The Suns had won 19 consecutive home games dating back to 2008-09 before losing to Cleveland on December 21. Including that game, they have now dropped three of their last six as the host.

The Grizzlies hit seven straight shots early on, as Mayo's jumper yielded an 18-6 lead just five minutes into the game.

Down 33-29 at the end of one, Stoudemire hit two free throws to open the second frame before Memphis embarked on a 16-0 run.

Young scored nine points during the stretch that was capped by a Gasol free throw at the 7:56 mark.

The margin at the break was 69-50, and the visitors continued to apply pressure out of the locker room, connecting on their first five attempts from the floor with Randolph's bucket extending the advantage to 81-56.

Suns head coach Alvin Gentry, clearly frustrated, was whistled for a technical foul at the end of the third, and Mayo hit the free throw for an eye-popping 101-76 cushion.

Mayo's three-pointer 2 1/2 minutes into the fourth pushed the advantage to 112-80, and the visitors had little trouble holding on from there.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .

''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''

Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.

He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.

''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
