Hornets, Spurs battle at New Orleans Arena

12/14/2006 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The injury-riddled New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets welcome the San Antonio Spurs tonight to New Orleans Arena.

Forwards Peja Stojakovic (strained lower back), David West (strained right forearm) and guard Bobby Jackson (cracked left rib) are all hurt for the Hornets. West has not played since November 12th and is averaging 17.4 points and 8.3 rebounds, while Stojakovic, who is averaging 17.8 points per game, last played on November 24th.

The Hornets, who play the middle contest of a three-game homestand, play the second of six games at New Orleans Arena. They defeated the Houston Rockets, 96-90, on November 5th.

Reigning Rookie of the Year Chris Paul scored 30 points and dished out 11 assists to lead New Orleans/Oklahoma City to a 95-89 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday at the Ford Center.

Jannero Pargo scored 15 points in the win over Cleveland for the Hornets, who snapped a two-game skid. Marc Jackson scored 14 points, while rookie Hilton Armstrong and Desmond Mason both netted 12 in the victory.

New Orleans/Oklahoma City is 5-3 as the host this season. The Hornets are scheduled to host Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday at New Orleans Arena.

San Antonio enters tonight's contest on a two-game winning streak. Tim Duncan scored 24 points to lead the Spurs past the Minnesota Timberwolves, 95-82, at the AT&T Center.

Tony Parker added 23 points in the win over Minnesota for the Spurs, who limited the Timberwolves to a season-low 26 points in the second half. Meanwhile, San Antonio came back from a 16-point first-half deficit to win for the sixth time in its last seven games overall. Manu Ginobili had 12 points for the Spurs, who forced 23 turnovers in the victory.

The Spurs are 9-3 on the road this season. After tonight's contest, San Antonio returns home to host Philadelphia, Memphis and Houston on the upcoming three-game homestand.

San Antonio has won six of its last seven at the Hornets. The Spurs have won three straight and seven of the last eight contests in this series.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
