Sharks get D Wallin from Carolina

02/07/2010 - San Jose, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The San Jose Sharks made a trade on Sunday, acquiring defenseman Niclas Wallin and a fifth-round pick in the 2010 draft from the Carolina Hurricanes for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft.

Wallin, a nine-year veteran, has five assists in 47 games with Carolina this season.

In 517 games in the NHL, all with Carolina, he has 18 goals and 51 assists. He won a Stanley Cup in 2006 with the Hurricanes.

"Niclas is a playoff-hardened, veteran player with lots of postseason experience and a Stanley Cup ring," said San Jose general manager Doug Wilson. "Good, solid character players are hard to come by and we think he will complement our existing group very well. He has a history of playing his best when the games mean the most."

The pick that San Jose is sending to Carolina was acquired from Buffalo in a previous trade.

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
