Sixers hold off Grizzlies in OT

Basketball Betting Lines

03/03/2007 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Andre Iguodala scored 27 points, pulled down nine rebounds and dished out six assists, as Philadelphia outlasted Memphis, 117-112, in overtime at the Wachovia Center.

Kyle Korver also had 27 points, and four steals, off the bench for the Sixers, who won their third straight game to match their longest winning streak of the year. Joe Smith chipped in 18 points and 12 boards, while Willie Green finished with 16 points.

Pau Gasol had a game-high 31 points and 13 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have dropped three straight games and six of seven. Mike Miller tallied 27 points and drained a three in the final seconds to send the game to overtime, while Hakim Warrick netted 17 points.

Both teams struggled to score early in the extra period, but a pair of Korver free throws and a subsequent steal and layup by Andre Miller put the Sixers up by four, 109-105, with 2:03 left.

Twelve seconds later, Samuel Dalembert was whistled for a goaltending violation, but Smith answered by getting deep on the blocks and depositing a short turnaround jumper to put the Sixers on top 111-107 with under a minute to go.

The Grizzlies never recovered and the Sixers held on for the win.

The teams were deadlocked at 73 entering the fourth quarter and things remained tight as the game headed toward the stretch. Miller hit Korver on the back door for a three-point play to even things at 95 with 3:07 left in regulation.

After Korver and Gasol exchanged buckets, Miller stuck a jumper from the right wing to put the Sixers on top 99-97 with 1:44 on the clock.

The Grizzlies went to Gasol deep on the blocks to tie things but Smith was up to the task and swatted the shot away. Philadelphia then took advantage at the other end when Smith deposited a short jumper in the lane to make it a 101-97 game with 1:23 remaining.

Memphis wasn't done, however, and drew within a point, 101-100, with 38 seconds left on a Miller jumper and a Damon Stoudamire free throw.

The Sixers isolated Iguodala at the top and the swingman broke down Rudy Gay and went to the baseline for a beautiful reverse lay-in to make it 103-100 with just 19.8 ticks left.

Miller refused to give in, however, and drained a long three from the top of the circle with just 4.9 seconds left to send things to overtime.

The Grizzlies took a slim 23-22 advantage after the opening 12 minutes and extended their lead to 48-45 at intermission.

Things remained tight in the third quarter and the teams were deadlocked at 73 heading to the final frame.

Game Notes

Miller had 11 points and 12 assists...Philly is now 13-15 at home this season and 3-0 on a six-game homestand. Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
